NY1 Report Looks at the Intersection of Political Consultants Who Advise Elected Officials

NY1 takes a close look at the relationship between New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and one of his closest advisors, Jonathan Rosen, who runs the “political public relations firm” BerlinRosen.

According to the story, they have a complex relationship. BerlinRosen helped get the Mayor elected, and also has a number of clients who do business with the city, including real estate developers, labor unions and others. But BerlinRosen is not registered as a lobbyist and therefore does not have to report its clients or what it does on behalf of those clients.

The de Blasio/BerlinRosen relationship has caught the attention of good government groups, who say that it may be time to put in place disclosure requirements for public relations firms such as BerlinRosen.

Last fall, Crain’s took a look at some others who practice this hybrid of political and strategic consulting.
